First, the answer to Vol. 21 (last week).
This one was a bit more challenging and a definite learning experience which I wanted to share with you. For those who guessed needles, that was incorrect, but I have experienced that issue on occasion, even with material certified as having passed through a metal detector.
As shown in the illustration, this was a coating issue for a specialty GCL product. The material failed permeability testing when the samples were tested in the coating impacted area. The manufacturer believed the issue to be caused by the coating still being warm when rolled up, resulting in the separation of the coating from the textile fibers during unrolling. It seems this somehow impacted the integrity of the core bentonite somehow. Unfortunately, additional testing from an engineering/CQA perspective was never performed as the material was not approved for its intended use. This issue was present on nearly all the rolls, and anywhere within the width of the roll. Keep your eyes open out there! Just like blemished geomembrane, things may suddenly appear and disappear.
In these blog posts, Do You See What Glen Sees, I will present a photograph or short video related to earthwork or geosynthetics construction and have you identify the significance of what you’re seeing.
It could be things being done correctly or incorrectly. Primarily, these will be things that impact quality.
In addition to my blog, I’ll post this content on X and LinkedIn. You can post your response on one of those two.
I’ll give you my thoughts on each photo or video when I post the next installment.
Do you see what I see? Or did you find something I missed? I’m excited to find out!

Here is the next installment. Take a good look. Do You See What Glen Sees?
Here’s volume #22 of Do You See What Glen Sees?! In a few days, we’ll be ushering in the summer season here in the United States, so stay hydrated and cool on those liner projects!
