Do You See What Glen Sees? (Vol. 37)

By October 9, 2025Uncategorized

First, the answer to Vol. 36 (last week).

Why would I take a photograph of light plants, you probably asked yourself.

Although it seems straightforward, the context of the photograph is the point of discussion. I’ve been on numerous projects throughout my career where you’re out on the project all day long and near the end of the day you see light-plants being delivered to the site. You find out that the installer and/or earthwork contractor plans on working a nightshift to complete work for some reason. The reasons vary, and most are somewhat irrelevant – trying to meet a deadline, trying to beat weather, trying to accommodate for hot temperatures, etc.

Someone had to decide to plan this. Someone had to decide to allow this. Light plants don’t just show up on a site at a moment’s notice unless they are already there. Sometimes (most times this is not the case) there are extra crews involved to relieve the dayshift. Allowing shifts to continue for extended hours, particularly after sunset, pose many risks, such as an increased risk of safety issues as well as quality issues. Often things decided on a moment’s notice aren’t carefully thought through – travel patterns, visibility required to do the work properly & safely, communications, etc.

Key takeaway: if night shift is a potential on your project, it should be addressed during the pre-construction meeting where details can be worked out including supplemental staffing, lighting requirements, safety requirements, etc.

In these blog posts, Do You See What Glen Sees, I will present a photograph or short video related to earthwork or geosynthetics construction and have you identify the significance of what you’re seeing.

It could be things being done correctly or incorrectly. Primarily, these will be things that impact quality.

In addition to my blog, I’ll post this content on X and LinkedIn. You can post your response on one of those two.

I’ll give you my thoughts on each photo or video when I post the next installment.

Do you see what I see? Or did you find something I missed? I’m excited to find out!

Here is the next installment. Take a good look. Do You See What Glen Sees?

October Greetings! Welcome to Volume 37 of ‘Do You See What Glen Sees?’!

With the onset of the colder weather in the northern hemisphere, I dug out a photo of one of the common things we start to see this time of year.

There is quite a bit going on here. What do you see?

As always, I look forward to your comments!
